NEET Score To Be Valid For 3 Years - Good News for Medical Aspirants

NEET score to be valid for 3 years

New rule will help students aspiring to study medicine in foreign universities as the scorecard will remain applicable for three years.

After making National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) mandatory for students aiming to pursue undergraduate medicine courses in foreign universities, Medical Council of India (MCI) has now put a three-year cap on the validity of NEET score.

“The result of NEET shall be valid for a period of three years from the date of declaration of result,” states the official circular issued by MCI. This will grant students more time to prepare and finalise an international university.

“This will entitle a candidate to pursue MBBS or equivalent medical course including pre-medical or language course, if any, followed by MBBS or equivalent medical course,” the statement further adds.

NEET score to be valid for 3 years

“The average admission process takes 6-12 months to get through in most institutes abroad. Sometimes managing finance and visa procedures also take time. For instance, if a student clears NEET this year but receives admission confirmation in a foreign university next year, there is ambiguity among students regarding eligibility with respect to NEET scores,” says VK Paul, chairman of MCI and member of National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog).

“In the absence of this rule, students might have to go through the trouble of taking NEET all over again,” he says. Ease of admission, says Paul, is the prime focus of the decision.

“MCI wanted to address the issue with a pragmatic approach and hence, we have kept the limit of three years as the standard and format of NEET can change with time,” he adds. This rule, says Paul, will also address the issue of mismatch between the Indian academic sessions and admission cycles of foreign universities. “Unlike India, most of the international universities function on a semester basis and have admission intake twice a year. This will prevent students missing out on their admissions abroad,” he adds.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE FOR GATE EXAMINATION 2019 - MAKE THE RIGHT ATTEMPT FOR A SUCCESS

GATE Exam 2019-way to success
TESTING TIMES: GATE

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a premier examination for graduate engineers who are aiming to secure a job in the PSUs or proceed for higher studies in IITs/ NITs, etc. These career defining goals of each aspirant are achieved with rigorous preparation and practice for more than 100 days. The GATE exam pattern comprises 65 questions and is divided into two sections — general aptitude (GA), which includes 10 questions and technical section, which has 55 questions.

GATE Exam

The technical section has about 20 questions in NAT format, while the remaining are MCQs. In all, candidates have 3 hours to answer the exam. In the GA section, question one to question five carry one mark, while question six to question 10 carry two marks. In the technical section, question one to question 25 carry one mark while question 26 to question 55 carry two marks. Negative marking for MCQ is 0.33 for one-mark questions and 0.66 for two marks questions. NAT questions do not have negative marking. Candidates should follow their desired method of attempting the question paper. Preparation for GATE is considered to be complete only once the exam is taken.

MAKE THE RIGHT ATTEMPT
Here are two ways to attempt the GATE exam and to maximize your score:

Common method
Solve the entire paper in one or two scans.

■ The procedure is: Click on each question, read the complete question, understand the question and answer it in the first attempt (without any guesses).

■ Always solve easy questions in minimum time in a single go.

■ Hard or lengthy questions can be kept for the second scan of the paper.

■ Answering any question should not take more than four to six minutes.

■ All the unsolved and reviewed questions must be attempted only in the second scan.

Alternative method
■ Candidates are provided with a notepad, which is used for attempting and solving questions in GATE.

■ Candidates may treat this as an offline exam, where they can solve questions and answer them on the notepad with options.

■ After 100 or 120 minutes, candidates can start marking the answers on the online system in a single flow.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE
■ GATE exam includes more than 20 NAT questions, which do not have any options. So, there is always an uncertainty about the correct answer. Therefore, a candidate should spend more time on these questions, only if she is absolutely sure about the answers. Else, one can skip the questions and come back later.

■ Your aim should be to attempt more than 50 questions, which you are confident about.

■ Restrict your guesswork to a maximum of two-three questions only if you are able to eliminate two options in an MCQ.

■ You may guess the answer for NAT as these do not carry negative marks. Choice of section to attempt first: GA or technical section.

■ Generally, candidates have a tendency to begin from the very first question, therefore it is advised to first attempt GA section and secure at-least 10-12 marks from this section.

■ Also, the candidate can then focus on technical questions till the last second of the exam.

■ If a candidate is confident about technical section, she can proceed with it first, followed by the GA section.

Steps to success in Exams - Tips on How to Clear Exam with Success

Steps to success in exams

A student’s marks in examination are directly proportional to one’s hard work. However, we forget that the result also depends on how you write answers to the questions in examination. The modus operandi of writing answers is an immaculate art, which you can master by putting in efforts and practicing daily. Here are a few ways to write your answers in examination, which will help you score better. So here are the Steps to success in Exams:

Write question number correctly and Legibly:
Students are usually careless while writing the question number. If the examiner is not able to make out the question number, the student will lose marks.

A. Always write correct number of the question you are attempting. Incorrect question number doesn’t help even if the answer is correct.

B. Numerals must be written in standard notation. Do not write them carelessly, lest they should be difficult to decipher. The way you write a figure must not be mistaken for some other number.

C. Write the question numbers in bold. Encircle the question number, so that the examiner may easily find out which question they are evaluating.

D. If a particular question has a few sub-parts, those too must be written correctly, boldly, clearly and legibly.

Here are the question patterns and suggestions on how to answer these:

Objective-type questions:

These are also called the multiple-choice questions. The questions are high scoring because these test memory retention of students. The answers to these questions are usually simple, and for these high level of intelligence and understanding is not required.

ü Objective-type questions may be asked in multiple ways. The answers to such questions must be written in full sentence or in a few words.

ü Sometimes, for the objective-type questions, where alternative answers are not given, correct answers need to be filled in the space or gap provided. In this case, the correct way of answering the question is to write the answer with the question number and underline it.

ü Some questions have a yes or no option given. You must clearly write yes or no with their question numbers.

Steps to success in Exams

Long-answer questions

Long-answer type questions are based on the holistic and intensive study of the entire syllabi of subjects. The questions carry six to eight marks and that is why they substantially affect the final score and results of students. These questions have also the word limit of around 300 to 350 words. But here too, it is not any hard and fast rule. As long as your answer focuses on contents and is relevant to the question asked, going beyond word limit is not an aberration.
Start answering these questions with the brief introduction of the topic concerned or the definitions of the related topics.

ü Laws, rules, theories, theorems, principles must be stated wherever necessary.

ü Answers must be divided in smaller paragraphs. Each paragraph must contain important contents and points not discussed earlier.

ü Use diagrams and graphs wherever essentially required. If these have not been demanded in the question, avoid wasting time on them.

ü Formulae and their derivations must be written clearly and step-wise.

ü Keep answers clean and do your best not to make any overwriting and cuts. If you commit any mistake, do not spoil the page to correct it.

Numerical questions

Numerical questions carry various denominations of marks, such as 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8... and so on. Keep in mind the following points:

ü Proceed step-wise to solve these questions.

ü Formulae must be written very clearly. Also explain the various symbols and notation used in the formula. It shows good attitude and culture of the students.

ü Overwriting in calculation must be avoided at all costs.

ü Write figures or numerals exactly correct and in their standard notation. Here again do not write the figures hurriedly and carelessly.

ü You must do rough work either at the margins of the same page or on the pages before the last page. At the top of these pages you must write rough or miscellaneous.

Work On your Performance Tips
§  You may start writing answers preferably from the third page of the answer copy. However, even if you begin answering from the second page, it would not be an issue.

§  Answering questions in sequence or in serial order gives you an edge over others who answer haphazardly. But, here too, again it is not any rule. You may answer any question first you feel confident about.

§  You must leave a few lines’ gap between two consecutive answers. The bottom line is answers of any two questions must not overlap each other, otherwise you may lose marks of one of the answers mistaken by the examiner for the answer of a single question.

§  Always write the entire answer on the same page or pages in sequence. Spreading your answers in different pages is not considered wise.
