CAT-2018 Test Analysis - CAT Cut-off May be Lower than 2017

TEST ANALYSIS: CAT – 2018

CAT cut-offs may be lower than 2017

This years( 2018) CAT Test Cut-offs may be lower than 2017 test. Abraham Lincoln famously said, 'Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.' If there is something that has justified the intelligence of importance good preparation deserves, it is CAT 2018.

Some Questions and these Answer related to CAT 2018 Exam:

·       Did CAT 2018 spring a major surprise this year?
          Well, no!

·       Was CAT 2018 more difficult than CAT 2017?
           Well, maybe not!

VARC section: The VARC section gave a mild surprise to students across both slots. Out went the taken-for-granted 6-Q and 3-Q passages. Making a wonder entrance were five question and four-question passages. That would have immediately enlarged the complete length of the content that needed to be read by test-takers to attempt the 24 RC questions. Decision-making for those who weren’t looking to answer all the RCs would have been riskier, what with all the RCs apparently of similar struggle level. The topics covered were also more unusual than usual — environment, biology, sociology, and history were the flavours of the day. The slight increase in difficulty in RC was mostly compensated for by easier VA sections in both slots, the vast relief for scholars being four-sentence Para Formation Questions. Odd-Man Out questions were also low-hanging fruits, with summary questions proving to be somewhat riskier. All in all, the VARC section hung around the same difficulty level as last year 2017; those who haven’t practiced a lot might have found it a little harder, given the nature of options in some questions and the intensity of the subjects.

DILR Section: The DILR Section was comparatively easier associated to CAT 2017, but make no mistake, it was still very challenging in both slots of the CAT Exam. Though, unlike last year, there was at least one doable set in both the slots along with some manageable/fight-worthy sets. Both the slots saw some straightforward set types - Distributions/Venn-Diagrams/Calculation based sets. Nevertheless, the time that these sets demanded was a dampener which would contribute to lowering the cut-offs.

Quant Section: The Quant Section in this CAT Exam 2018 proved to be the high tide in both slots. CAT Exam under Quant section was easily a few notches higher in difficulty level as compared to CAT 2017. This difficulty level was tempted mainly by the need to work around fixed methods. In this Section these is no low hanging fruits and very few questions could be solved without breaking a sweat. Quant Questions were long, and some also had extra conditions (read twists) that the scholars needed to watch out for. The number of Easy questions saw a obviously drastic fall compared to last year which will contribute to a steep fall in the cut-offs this year. The other seeming feature of the QA section this year is the continued focus on arithmetic. Pure-maths questions (on Functions, P&C, CG, etc.) were present, albeit lower in number.

Within mathematics, the focus on normal suspects like Numbers was very low in both the slots, while Geometry, TW and TD had very good representation. While a very well-prepared scholar would not have broken much sweat, those who were tentative on their homework would have found out that the going was not as smooth as they would have liked it to be.

Overall:  CAT 2018 Examination was a smooth practice for scholars across the republic. From the students' viewpoint, it turned out to be more or less on the expected lines with a bit of fluctuation in the difficulty of sections here and there. The CAT Exam 2018 cut-offs are expected to be a tad lower than those of last year 2018, overall, QA being the spoilsport this time around.

SHOCKING DATA
■ Rohtak-based RTI activist Subhash seeks information about jobless youth registered at employment exchanges in the state from October 1, 2014, to May 20, 2018, and those who have got jobs in this period

■ Gets information pertaining to Rohtak, Nuh, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Mahendragarh, Ambala, Jind, Faridabad, Palwal, Fatehabad, Sirsa, Yamunanagar, Dadri, Bhiwani and Panchkula districts in response to RTI query

Only 647 of the 15.21 lakh youth registered at employment exchanges in 15 districts got jobs in about four years. Of these, 28 have been employed on contract and 139 are in private jobs,” Subhash said.

He stated that from information received in response to the RTI application, it seemed that generation of jobs was not on the priority list of the government and it has given only assurances to the jobless youth.

Information furnished by government functionaries pertains to Rohtak, Nuh, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Mahendragarh, Ambala, Jind, Faridabad, Palwal, Fatehabad, Sirsa, Yamunanagar, Dadri, Bhiwani and Panchkula districts. As per the RTI replies, 2.02 lakh youth were registered in Rohtak from October 1, 2014, to Many 20, 2018, but none of them got a job during this period and 10,835 eligible unemployed youth were given unemployment allowance totalling Rs 3.32 crore.

None of the 2.42 lakh youth registered in Karnal got any job during this period. Rohtak is the home district of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Karnal his Assembly constituency.

Uncertainty on 50,000 contractual staff jobs - High Court Deadline to Fill Vacancies End of November 30 2018

Uncertainty on 50,000 contractual staff jobs

HC deadline to fill vacancies ends on Nov 30

Chandigarh, November 18: Clouds of uncertainty are hovering over the employment of nearly 50,000 contractual and ad hoc employees of the Haryana Government.

With the High Court’s six month deadline to fill vacancies on a regular basis in place of the contractual and ad hoc employees ending on November 30, the contractual staff is in a state of tizzy. In fact, it is double whammy for the contractual staff as the Supreme Court, which was moved by the Haryana Government to challenge the May 31, 2018, judgment of the high court quashing the regularisation policies and setting the six month deadline, is yet to hear the matter.

As there are thousands of employees who had been appointed on ad hoc/contract/work-charged/daily wages to take care of the work being carried out by them in different departments, we direct that they be allowed to continue for a period of six months, during which the state shall ensure that regular posts, wherever required, are advertised and the process of selection is completed,” the high court in its May 31 judgement had said.
Uncertainty on 50,000 contractual staff jobs

The high court had made it clear that under no circumstances would any temporary employee be allowed to continue thereafter. “Unless there is a relief from the Supreme Court, over 50,000 contractual employees face the spectre of losing their jobs,” Subhash Lamba, Sarv Karamchari Sangh (SKS) general secretary, said, demanding that the Khattar government should bring an ordinance for the regularisation of the services of the contractual staff.
It may be recalled that the state government had prepared the draft Bill — Haryana Regularisation of Services Bill, 2018 — to be tabled in the Monsoon Session of the Haryana Assembly. However, taking a U-turn and with a view to exhausting the legal options before a Bill is brought before the Haryana Assembly against the May 31 HC order adversely affecting the contractual staff, the Haryana Government filed an SLP in the Supreme Court in September. The apex court is yet to be hear the SLP.

30 Day Plan to Crack CAT Examination 2018 - Some FAQs To Pull Up your Percentile in CAT Exam

A 30-day plan to crack CAT

With just a month left for the CAT exam date 2018, here are answers to some FAQs to pull up your percentile in CAT Examination.

How should an aspirant prepare a timetable for the last month?
In the last month, a candidate can take mock tests (AIMCATs and SAMCATs), analyse the performance and study and prepare to overcome shortcomings. One can also focus on revision of important concepts and formulas.

What should now be the ideal strategy for taking mock tests?
Don’t attempt too many of them. Two a day are enough. More than that is overkill. But, it is important to take tests. And a far more important thing is to objectively analyse and then work on the feedback received. Most aspirants can manage this if they make a cycle of two three days. If you are very sure about your preparation, then maybe you can manage more. However, if you still need to practice, then take two tests in a week and focus on concepts. Now that the CAT authorities have sent the admit cards, you know your time slot for the examination. Attempt as many mocks tests as possible at the time of your actual exam slot. This will sync your body clock and body cycle to perform best on the exam day.

A 30-day plan to crack CAT

What are the important topics for last-minute revision?
There is nothing less or more important in CAT. As a rule, CAT is an exam that is meant to surprise candidates with questions that are unexpected. Don’t focus on vocabulary building, but do revise tricky questions of QA or common mistakes of grammar.

How can the students stay calm and motivated at this time?
Focus on the alternatives. Thinking that CAT is the most important thing in life will create unnecessary pressure. Think of past successes and how you overcame hurdles.

How can students increase their accuracy and speed?
Build accuracy first and then with practice, you will gain speed on your own. Build a sense of urgency while taking the exam.

How should the ideal questions in the CAT be selected?
Maximum accuracy should not be the aim. Due to time pressure and negative marking, doing questions with 100 per cent accuracy may lead to a drop in the percentile since you are sacrificing attempts. Check all the questions and attempt ones that consume less time. You can do the sections in two rounds. In the first, do easy questions and “bookmark for review” the moderate ones. In the second round, do the “bookmarked for review” questions to do the moderate ones and drop the tough ones.

How many questions should be attempted in each section to score 99+ percentile?
It all depends on the difficulty level of the test. In case the test is difficult, the attempts will fall and conversely in an easy test, the attempts will rise.

What are the common mistakes to avoid on the exam day?
Make sure you check the physical location of the centre at least a day before and analyse how you reach the exam centre much before time. Carry all the necessary documents. Avoid heavy meals before the exam, as it is a long and mentally and physically taxing exam. Don’t panic if the paper seems tougher than usual. If it is indeed so, it is true for all others too and thus percentiles will not be affected. Don’t take the exam with a pre-determined number of attempts or scores in your mind. Don’t waste time on any one question.

A last-minute advice to the aspiring candidates... Relax on the last day. Watch a movie. Take your mind off the exam. That actually helps the performance on the D-day.

Education Dept to improve English skills to eventually help students emigrate

Chandigarh, October 3, 2018:  With the youth in Punjab, nothing sells like Canada. Hoping to tap into the emigration craze, the state Education Department has come up with a plan to improve their English skills by launching a programme called the ‘IELTS’. Only in this case it stands for “Interactive English Language Training for Students”. The acronym plays on the language testing exam prescribed by several countries for immigrants, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Coaching for the IELTS exam has become a roaring industry in the state. Even as Bindu Gulati, Assistant Director of the State Council of Education Research and Training that has designed the programme, says they do not claim to help students emigrate, the fact is that the course is designed such that it will improve their chances of success with the test. The free coaching is set to start for class XI and XII students in around 1,000 government senior secondary schools from November 1.

Our intention is to improve students’ proficiency in English. They are paying huge amounts to private coaching centres. Most of the staff in these centres are not better qualified than our teachers. Our staff have surveyed private centres, even taken their mock tests. Krishan Kumar, SECRETARY (EDUCATION)

Punjab govt comes up with own IELTS
The programme will make use of existing faculty. There are already 46 teachers on the department rolls especially trained in Canada in the teaching of English. They are conducting workshops in districts to train other teachers. In 2014, 50 teachers were sent to Canada by then CM Parkash Singh Badal specially to learn IELTS coaching; four have since retired. Their services, however, were never utilised till now. Bindu Gulati says the exercise will make students “subject smart”, particularly in listening, comprehending and speaking English.

Some Recent FAQ Related to the Government Jobs Asked By Students with Complete Answer

Some FAQ Related to the Government Jobs

Am I eligible for teaching job after BTech?
Question:1.I am a final year student of BTech from Phagwara. I want to go into teaching. I have heard that BTech students can give the NET to become a lecturer?

Some FAQ Related to the Government Jobs
Answer. The CSIR-UGC NET Exam for JRF & Lectureship is conducted by the CSIR in five areas: Chemical Sciences, Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean & Planetary Sciences, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences. Yes, BS-4 years/ BE/BTech/ B.Pharma graduates are eligible to take the NET, apart from those with an MSc or equivalent degree/BS-MS/MBBS with minimum 55 per cent marks (5 per cent relaxation in marks for SC/ST/ OBC/ PwD). In case you wish to take the CSIR-UGC NET Exam to be held on December 16, 2018, you can apply under the “Results Awaited” (RA) category – provided you complete your degree within two years in order to avail of the Fellowship (JRF). However, if you only possess a Bachelor’s degree (BE/BTech/BPharma), you’re not eligible for lectureship. Incidentally, the IITs offer direct admission to PhD for meritorious BE/BTech students (1st divisioners).

But, as per current UGC norms, these PhD degree-holders are not eligible for the post of Assistant Professors in Indian universities although they’re qualified for the post at the IITs/NITs. Reason?

They don’t possess the mandatory master’s degree. This anomaly was finally addressed by the UGC in its recent meeting and is likely to be scrapped/amended. Incidentally, BSc (Hons) or equivalent degree-holders who are enrolled in Integrated MS-PhD programmes (with minimum 55% marks) can also apply. The age limit is 28 years for JRF (NET). There’s a 5-year relaxation in age limit for SC/ST/ /PwD/Women candidates and 3 yrs for OBC (creamy layer). The application deadline is October 15, 2018.

Data science course from govt agency?
Question:2. I have been working as a software developer in a small IT firm in Noida for the past five years after doing my MCA. I have been reading about Data Science and am very keen to learn something about it. But it is not possible for me to leave my job as I have family responsibilities. Nor can I spend a huge amount on fancy courses. What do you suggest?

Answer. For starters, if you can spare four (two-day) weekends, there’s an interesting Skill Development programme on Data Science & Machine Learning offered by the M/o Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME), Govt. of India, that you could check out. The technology Development Centre of MSME, Meerut would be your best bet. If you hurry, you could enroll for their first session which starts on October 6, in NOIDA (Sect 3) itself. Being a government initiative, the fee has been kept at Rs.25,000 (+GST). For details, log onto: www.ppdcmeerut.com .

There are several other courses in the market, including some good online ones that are offered via the MOOCS platform which you could check out. In fact, data scientists and front-end developers received the maximum salary hikes in 2017. Those with three to five years of experience fetched salaries ranging from Rs.25-29 lakh last year. Data scientists use computing systems to collect, analyse and interpret large quantities of data and information to help businesses (including startups) improve their operations and gain a competitive edge over their rivals. And in the wake of the AI (Artificial Intelligence) boom, many companies are looking to grow their Data Analytics teams.

Some Myths and Reality Related to the Civil Entrance Exam - You should know these Facts

Facts to Crack Civil Services Examination
Some Myths and Reality Related to the Civil Exam

Any aspirant of the civil services examination knows about the countless doubts and myths that accompany the many ‘sincere’ advises of people around. It is important to dispel the myths and take on the tough journey with confidence. Time to confront these with corresponding realities.
Facts to Crack Civil Services Examination

Myth: Many people said that there are too much political interference in the IAS and the IPS.
Reality: The decisions taken by IAS and IPS officers have immense impact on the common man. Any position that promises authority is bound to exercise some control as well. The more important the position, greater the control will be. However, most of us tend to believe that private sector offers a great degree of independence, which again is not true. The top positions in the private sector are also subject to control or interference in some form or the other.

Myth:Students who have excellent academic record can only crack civil services examination.
Reality: Intelligence is subjective. Can we call a student intelligent if he has consistently secured first division? Or can a student who scores 100 per cent in mathematics or physics in Class X be tagged as ‘intelligent’?
A survey conducted a few years back revealed that most of the successful candidates in civil services examination had secured only a second division in graduation, which led us to believe that a high academic score is a definite asset, but a second or third division is definitely not an impediment to attain success.

Myth: Some optionals have better prospects at the preliminary level.
Reality: Candidates have 23 optionals to choose from and each of them offers equal chances of success. UPSC follows the proportionate method of representation, which weigh every optional proportionally.

Myth: Every optional has a ‘cut-off’ mark. Hence, it is better to choose one with a low cut-off.
Reality: What do we understand by cut-off? Out of the 10,000 qualified candidates, marks scored by the last candidate mark the ‘cut-off.’ Thus, candidates who score more than the cut-off will qualify and those who don’t will not. In a competitive examination, a cut-off score changes from year to year and there is no qualifying score.

Myth: Questions asked in optional ‘X’ are difficult and perplexing. Hence, it is better to choose optional ‘Y’.
Reality: In a competitive exam, if the questions are difficult every aspirant will score less and automatically the cut-off marks will be low.

Myth: The general studies paper accounts for only 150 marks, on the other hand the optional paper is of 300 marks. Therefore general studies calls for more attention.
Reality: While it is true that more attention needs to be given to optional, preparation for general studies should not be neglected as well. Remember, every mark counts and a single mark determines success or failure.

Myth: The same subject for prelims and mains should not be chosen.
Reality: There is no rule of thumb that the same optional needs to be chosen both for prelims and mains exam, but it is advisable to stick to one subject. If different options are taken, it would lead to tragic waste of time.

Myth: When the same optional is picked up both for prelims and the mains exam, then it is not required to prepare separately for the preliminary examination. Preparation for the mains is sufficient.
Reality: The preliminary calls for a micro approach, whereas the mains require a broad perspective. Hence, even though 90 per cent of the preliminary syllabus is included in the mains, different methods of preparation are required.

Myth: In order to crack the civil services examination, an aspirant has to toil for at least 16 hours a day.
Reality: Successful candidates in CSE examination state that it is not the number of hours that is important, but the work that you put in those hours. We all have a span of attention and the preparation should be tailored accordingly. However, tall claims are made about 16 hours of extensive study, but weather it is humanly possible or not is still debatable.

Myth: Nobody can be sure of success in prelims until the results are announced, so it is better to set about preparation for the mains only after the prelims.
Reality: Like any other competitive exams, civil services examination also has a ‘chance’ factor. However, through a well-directed effort, an element of chance can be cut-down to a large extent. Preparation in the right direction steps up your chances of success in the examination to 90 per cent. However, mains exam is conducted three months after the declaration of prelims result. So, 90 days is ‘just not’ sufficient to prepare for two optional, an essay and a general studies paper.

Myth: The provisions of reservation are not applied at the preliminary examination
Reality: The provisions of reservations are applied at each stage of the examination; otherwise a proportional representation to the next stage is not possible.
